CJ Biomaterials Overview
Pioneering Sustainable Innovations in Bioplastics
CJ Biomaterials develops meaningful solutions that positively affect our planet and human health and well-being by addressing the challenges posed by fossil fuel-based technologies – including plastic waste. CJ Biomaterials invents and manufactures bio-based chemicals and biopolymers as part of a long-term vision to create a more sustainable future by offering circular solutions that replace many non-recyclable, non-reusable and fossil fuel-based plastics and chemicals.
CJ Biomaterials Mission Statement
We create sustainable values
to save lives and protect the earth
Today, CJ Biomaterials is engaged in the manufacture of PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate) – both polymers and associated basic chemicals. We are the global leader in the manufacture and application of amorphous polyhydroxyalkanoates (aPHA).
Amorphous polyhydroxyalkanoates have strong biodegradability and compostability properties and can contribute to marine or soil biodegradable or home compostable products in a variety of applications. In conjunction with other biopolymers, CJ Biomaterials' aPHA can improve the mechanical properties of other biopolymers, such as toughness, strength, and ductility, while simultaneously enhancing the speed of composting/biodegradation.
Core expertise to provide solutions at scale
CJ Biomaterials has the core technology platforms necessary to implement PHA-based solutions at scale, including bioscience, chemical engineering, materials innovation and applications development. We have the technology, expertise and production capacity to make an impact with PHA in global markets and important applications – ranging from flexible and rigid packaging, 3D printing and agricultural films to coatings, personal care, and healthcare.
Supported by world-leading capabilities
CJ Biomaterials is supported in our activities by our parent organizations – the CJ Group, CJ CheilJedang and its CJ BIO division. CJ Group is a South Korean conglomerate holding company headquartered in Seoul. It includes numerous businesses in various food and food service industries, pharmaceutics and biotechnology, entertainment and media, home shopping and logistics.
CJ CheilJedang, which is a subsidiary of CJ Group, is a South Korean food and biotechnology company based in Seoul that manufactures food ingredients, ambient, frozen and chilled packaged food products, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. CJ CheilJedang launched its BIO division and started its biotechnology business in 1964 with the production of monosodium glutamate. With 13 global manufacturing facilities, CJ BIO is the world's leading supplier of fermentation-based bio products for animal nutrition, human nutrition, and biomaterials.
